What Is About That Time?
About That Time is an independent feature film that blends comedy, fantasy, and emotional truth. The story follows two cousins who stumble upon a time-traveling portal at a family cookout — and embark on a mission to bring back a to-go plate of their late grandmother’s mac and cheese. What begins as a lighthearted trip quickly reveals deeper themes of grief, legacy, and intergenerational healing.
Why It Matters
In writer/director Jonathan Kemp’s words:
“I wrote About That Time as a healing tool. After losing my cousin in 2017, I wanted to create a story where grief and joy could exist side by side — where Black families could laugh, cry, and time travel all at once.”
The project is being positioned as a cultural artifact — one that celebrates Black Southern storytelling, while exploring legacy, memory, and transformation. The team is comprised of all Black cast and majority Black crew, with cast and crew drawn from Virginia, D.C., and across the South. The film will be shooting July 9-30th in Hampton Roads, Virginia.
Community Distribution Plan
This isn’t just a film. It’s a movement.
The team behind About That Time is building a full distribution model rooted in community ownership, healing, and joy — including:
A national HBCU & community tour
Free public screenings in barbershops, church basements, and local theaters
Post-film panels in partnership with organizations like BEAM (Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective)
An original card game featured in the film launching alongside the premiere
How to Support
The team is seeking $40,000 in grassroots funding to:
Pay local Black crew and talent
Cover location rentals across Hampton Roads
Secure music licensing and insurance
Retain ownership and creative control
Every dollar is tax-deductible through their fiscal sponsor, Black Film Space.
All donors are acknowledged publicly, and select tiers include digital perks and invitations to live events.
